Did Victoria Beckham copy Osman? Posh dress is almost identical to one by fellow British designer

Was it all just too good to be true? A once peroxide WAG transformed into credible fashionista thanks to a self-named fashion label and a choppy haircut.

But today, Victoria Beckham was accused of copying a dress from a rival designer's collection.

A deep blue column gown, which she has called her 'sexiest dress yet,' has been likened to one by London-based designer Osman Yousefzada.

Victoria is said to have borrowed the pale blue gown from the designer's atelier last year, but returned it without buying.

Osman, whose fans include Sarah Brown, Mischa Barton and Tamsin Egerton, included the dress in his winter 2009 collection. Today he said that he was flattered that the former Spice Girl might have been inspired by one of his pieces.

'A lot of people have mentioned the similarity to me and of course it is very flattering,' he told Vogue.com.

Flattered: Designer Osman Yousefzada explained how his column dress had been inspired by a bath towel

'It is very flattering to think she may have tried my dress and been inspired to create something similar, since it means she must have liked the way the dress was cut and the way it felt to wear.

'I like to dress powerful, confident women so it's great to think the dress might have inspired her.'

Fashion credibility: Victoria Beckham in a design from her own label

He added that the elegant design had been inspired by a bathroom towel.

'I created the dress by wrapping my bathroom towel at first to get the shape, and then by doing the same thing with material and securing it with an internal corset, so the fabric is allowed to move effortlessly.'

Plagiarism or not, the suggestion is unlikely to put off the many fans of Victoria's designs.

Today a source close to the 35-year-old rubbished the rumour.

'Column dresses have been around for decades, probably even longer,' they told Mailonline.

'In addition, Victoria has had variations of the column dress in all her previous collections so any suggestion of plagiarism is nonsense!'
Since its launch in 2008, the Victoria Beckham label has been a hit with critics and celebrities alike.

Her form-fitting dresses, which feature hidden corsets and sexy zips running down the back of each piece, have been seen on stars from Elle Macpherson and Dannii Minogue to Jennifer Lopez and Drew Barrymore.

At her most recent show in New York on Valentine's Day she admitted that she was still learning.

'I still feel I need to prove myself - all my life I’ve had to prove myself. Each season, I have to better myself. I really want to grow as a designer.'
